Contact Dance Improvisation ~ Indulging | the Minutiae of our Senses

  • Studio 108 321 Wallace Street #206, Nanaimo, BC, Canada Nanaimo Canada (map)

In this beginners/intermediate workshop, Arash Khakpour will support us in our exploration of agility and tactility to awaken our inner CATS.

We will dive into discovering how the physical skill sets we already know can expand through indulging in the range of our senses, while noticing emotions and celebrating “failures”.

We will work with simple improvisational tasks to warm up and to tune into our perception within the group, and using the intelligence of the group. We will then work on what Arash calls conscious duetting by using rolling point, sloughing, surfacing, bridging, yielding, anchoring, pressure modulation, leaning and weight-sharing to sharpen our physical awareness. This will lead us to work with multiple partners to invite the physical sensing to shift our perception and enhance our agility, creativity and range within our dances.

All levels welcome! Please wear comfortable clothing to dance in and bring long sleeve shirts if you have them.

Arash Khakpour (آرش خاکپور) is a dancer and choreographer from Tehran, now based in Vancouver. He has been practicing contact improvisation regularly at EDAM dance for the past 13 years and is a company member in the EDAM ensemble since 2017. Arash sees dance as a process of physical, emotional and spiritual discovery and as a mode of transformation. In his work, he investigates the complexities of the human experience; how thoughts influence the body and vice versa; what it means and feels to simply be a body on stage.
